January 20, 2023 (Friday): The Rough & Tumble Rescheduled to May 20th

January 21, 2023 (Saturday): Denny Breau and Carol Noonan click for details
with Duke Levine and Kevin Barry.
Benefits Mountain Top Music Center

How lucky am I? A shared stage of Guitar Gods.,..my two cohorts and for the first time on our stage, Denny Breau. Very excited to have Denny here! I have played with Duke and Kevin for many years and many records including my Rounder recordings and indie albums. We all have a mutual respect for Denny’s talents and look forward to swapping songs and laughs for this special night.

About Denny - Denny is a triple threat: a consummate picker, evocative songwriter, and a singer with a ” voice that is warm and inviting but completely unpretentious— much like the singer himself,” according to Lucky Clark. Mainers have long considered Denny a “must –see,” but they are happy to share a favorite son with those “from away.” Denny Breau’s rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear style allows him to do amazing and stunning things with a six-string guitar. He first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching fingerwork that sets ears aflame. The lighting fast guitar lines that seem almost humanly impossible to accomplish are balanced with those that have a quiet intimacy and wrap tenderly around his carefully crafted songs. He mixes genres with ease — folk, Delta blues, country and jazz It is not an exaggeration to say that Denny was born to the instrument. His parents, Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody, were popular country performers and RCA recording artists beginning in the 1940s. His older brother, the late Lenny Breau, is considered a jazz guitar giant.

About Kevin and Duke -
Kevin Barry and Duke Levine...these two monster players have played with Carol for decades while racking up an impressive list of artists whom they have so aptly backed up . Recently Duke can be seen on tour with Bonnie Rait's band, and Kevin with Jackson Browne's. Other greats to their resume are Mary Chapin Carpenter, Peter Wolf, Ray LaMontagne, and many more. When Carol, Duke and Kevin get together it is magic.

About Carol - Carol Noonan is an American folk singer/songwriter from Maine. She began her career as the lead singer and songwriter for the band Knots and Crosses. They built a significant following around Boston and the New England area. After a major-label bidding war led to a failed deal with Island Records, the group disbanded.Noonan went on to do three solo albums for the Philo/Rounder label through 1997. The "Carol Noonan Band" featured Duke Levine and Kevin Barry on guitars. They have stayed with her for most of her live performances over the years as well as all her albums. Since her time with Rounder she has released a number of albums on her own label carolnoonanmusic.com. An NPR darling for her music, she has also been a guest essayist on Weekend Edition, and was included on one of their Driveway Moments compilations. These days she owns and runs the Stone Mountain Arts Center, a music hall behind their house in Brownfield, Maine with her husband Jeff.

About Mountain Top Music Center - Mountain Top Music Center is a community music school located in neighboring Conway, New Hampshire. More than 350 young people and adults alike participate in lessons, classes, workshops, and community ensembles each year.

January 27, 2023 ( Friday): Dustbowl Revival click for details
Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting, the group collected a devoted fan base coast-to-coast. After throwing five of their own virtual Sway-At-Home festivals during the shut-down featuring nearly forty artists, the always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin, Josh Heffernan, Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus.

Adventures in folky funk! After spending years on the road, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows. Now they will do it on our stage :.)) Check them out..a video of their new album . Set Me Free!

January 28, 2023 (Saturday): Mike Farris click for details
I read a review that said that ..."there aren't many current male singers who use their voices to soar, float and deliver material with the spiritual commitment of Mike Farris." I couldn't agree more. GRammy award winning MIke Farris s a truly soulful singer. If you are as tired as I am of the wimpy pop singers they are pumping out these days, than Mike Farris is the cure. I little renegade, a little Gospel, a little Sam Cooke , and a lot uniquely his own. Mike is here with his band, and we are wicked excited! Just what we need for a winter warm up! Check him out .

February 4, 2023 (Saturday): Kris Delmhorst click for details
Singer/songwriters Kris Delmhorst is one of my absolute favs. A prolific writer and constant collaborator, she grew up in Brooklyn NY. Her musical home is in Boston where she cut her teeth on open mics, bar gigs, and subway busking, before embarking on her life as an internationally touring songwriter. She has a most rich, beautiful, and smokey voice and when she sings she is lost in the song more deeply than most. But what might get missed about her obvious talents, is just want a great musician she is. She is a musician's musician, and those of us who are, feel unanimous about giving her that title.

February 15, 2023 (Wednesday): Comedian Bob Marley click for details
I don't know any other person who worked harder to keep us entertained during 2020 and beyond than comedian Bob Marley. His daily videos were a comic relief from the world's challenges, and there have been many. Bob has a gift and a way of finding the hilarity in the obvious and the seemingly common occurrences in our sometimes mundane lives. In fact, he would make fun of me for saying all this!!. I can just hear him mocking me now!

On a personal note, Bob kept my staff from going crazy! We appreciate him for being one of the artists that was willing to do shows in whatever way he could to make venues and people laugh..whether it was a small capacity show or a drive in…he did it all. Nothing can stop the Bob Marley train and we love him for that. And yes, I said artist!!

Bob is not just our Maine comedian, he is one of the funniest people in the current world of comedy. His viral videos have thrust him into further popularity as one of the hottest and most sought after comedians in the country. But we are lucky he will still come to us! You know'em, you love'm...more than 15 years as a stand-up comic, Maine's own Bob Marley has been featured in his own special on Comedy Central, and is one of the few comics to do the complete late night TV circuit: The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Craig Kilborn. But all those accolades aside, he is just one of us, and we can't get enough of him. And geesh don't we all need to laugh right now. Always a quick sell out!

February 16, 2023 (Thursday): Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy click for details
The entertainment world is filled with extraordinary stories. But few match the beguiling true-life tale of Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music, whose dazzling career achievements underpin an incomparable off-stage life. Indeed, when two of the planet’s very best fiddle players married in 2002, the proverbial mantelpiece was instantly crammed with JUNO and East Coast Music Awards. Though MacMaster and Leahy followed different trajectories – she a Cape Breton native who could step-dance before she could walk; he the oldest brother of acclaimed family group Leahy – both had assuredly crested the traditional music peak. Their first recorded collaboration, 2015’s Bob Ezrin-produced album One, which was followed by 2016’s A Celtic Family Christmas (and which cemented the couple’s status as powerhouses on the seasonal circuit) confirmed MacMaster and Leahy are as dynamic working together as they were working apart. Performing thousands of shows and collaborating with a multitude of world renowned artists Natalie’s and Donnell’s family and work-life have been intertwined. Their values are equally as important in their life as music. They believe incorporating family into the performances and their music is the perfect way to maintain a healthy work-life balance. MacMaster and Leahy now have five beautiful children, and Natalie and Donnell devotion to them is job number one. On a personal note, I cannot describe the elation and emotion when this family performs together...love is not a big enough word.

February 24, 2023 (Friday): Alana MacDonald Band click for details
Known largely as the singer/songwriter and violinist of the super group Devonsquare, Alana is an artist who’s music can stand alone. When you talk of Maine talent, her name will be at the top of the list. She is a striking woman who has a force that is infectious. With a terrific back up band, Alana always brings it. We are so happy to have her here once again.

February 25, 2023 (Saturday): Jesse Dee and Band click for details
Boston’s Jesse Dee is a singing, song-writing, guitar-playing soul man. A modern day trailblazer inspired by the old school. Dee's passion is exploring and updating soul music for contemporary audiences. With his warm and honest sound, his instantly memorable melodies and positive, slice-of-life lyrics (evoking the heyday of the Brill Building songwriters), he accomplishes just that. His inventive, hook-filled songs are delivered with buoyant, youthful exuberance.

Live, he always brings down the house, and keeps his ever-growing fan base coming back for more. His band lays down driving, infectious grooves while Dee's expressive vocals put him in a class by himself. On the strength of his fervent live shows, Dee plays to packed clubs in New England and has toured across Europe, earning new fans at every gig.

Jesse is one of our favorite musicians…we just love him and you will too!

March 3, 2023 (Friday): Robert Cray Band click for details
Can't wait to hear the best band in the world. If you haven't seen'em you have to..if you already have, you know you miss'em! Blues guitarist and singer songwriter Robert Cray is a five-time Grammy Award winner and a Blues Hall of Famer of course, but all the accolades in the world will not do justice to his live show. You know I talk about those hand full of artists that I always say you gotta see...this is one of them. Few both play guitar and sing so smoothly and heartfelt and that band is killer. And did I say they are the nicest buncha guys you will ever meet? Come see for yerself. A rare up close and personal concert. A SMAC FAV!

Sorry, due to the high cost of bringing this great artist here, only Gold Passes are applicable to this show.

March 4, 2023
(Saturday): Lonesome Ace Stringband (SMAC recommended) details
Ya know we get more than our share of string band pitched to us these days. But with all the rebooting and reinventions of bluegrass and old timey music, every once in while something more pure comes through.

Case in point from from Canada , the Lonesome Ace Stringband is an old-time band with bluegrass chops that play some righteous folk and country music. There's a depth of groove and sense of space not often heard in bluegrass today, a level of instrumental interplay and vocal blend uncommon in old-time, and an on-stage rapport that transcends all of this. Here is a sweet ballad YouTube video to watch. But no worries they can S&@t kick it with the rest of them.

March 8, 2023 (Wednesday): Darlingside click for details
Long been praised for their harmonies and intelligent songwriting, described by NPR as “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop,” and which The New Yorker compared to David Crosby and the Byrds. Their dynamic presence (crowded tightly together onstage for the audience to witness four voices turn to a singular texture of sound), paired with their sharp wit and wordplay, have made them a live-performance favorite, and their songs treasures for literary and lyric-loving fans. Just a beautiful band. See and hear for yerself.

March 10, 2023 ( Friday): The Suitcase Junket click for details
The first time Suitcase was here some lucky folks saw him as part of our free music series. That was the first time he blew everyone away. Since then performs to a packed house and does the same. I just love this guy. Totally original and totally a giver when it some to his audience. You feel like part of his journey. One man band, doesn't do this artist justice. Suitcase is an Artist, tinkerer, tunesmith, swamp Yankee. Matt Lorenz is a one-man salvage specialist singing into the hollow of a Dumpster guitar, slipping a broken bottleneck onto the slide finger, railing on a box of twisted forks and bones, rocking till every sound is ragged at its edges, till the house is singing back. Then, unplugging all the amps and letting one mountain ballad soar over the raw strings on that guitar. Every night is a hard-driving, blues-grinding, throat-singing search-and-rescue junket. Sooner or later everything rusts, busts, and gets tossed into the junk heap: iron, bones, leather, hot rods, muskrats, the night, the heart. The goal is to recover it. To waste nothing. To create new ways from old. This is The Suitcase Junket.

Watch his YouTube video of him …. I Love this song. A Big Staff Favorite!

(Friday): St. Paddy's Celebration Big Barn Musical Dinner details
A celebration of the greenest of holidays.

March 18, 2023 (Saturday): Aoife O'Donovan plays Nebraska click for details
Aoife O’Donovan will perform Bruce Springsteen’s album Nebraska solo in it’s entirety.
The New York Times described Aoife’s performance of the album as "saluting Springsteen’s songcraft with clear, pitch-perfect articulation and affable delivery.” Grammy award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan operates in a thrilling musical world beyond genre. Deemed “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, she has released three critically-acclaimed and boundary-blurring solo albums including her most recent record, 2022’s boldly orchestrated and literarily crafted Age Of Apathy. Recorded and written over the course of Winter and Spring 2021 with acclaimed producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Rhiannon Giddens), Age Of Apathy is “stunning” (Rolling Stone) and “taps into the propulsion of prime Joni Mitchell” (Pitchfork).

A savvy and generous collaborator, Aoife is one third of the group I’m With Her with bandmates Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz. The trio’s debut album See You Around was hailed as “willfully open-hearted” by NPR Music. I’m With Her earned an Americana Music Association Award in 2019 for Duo/Group of the Year, and a Grammy-award in 2020 for Best American Roots Song.

O’Donovan spent the preceding decade as co-founder and front woman of the string band, Crooked Still and is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions - the group with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile. She has appeared as a featured vocalist with over a dozen symphonies including the National Symphony Orchestra, written for Alison Krauss, performed with jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas, and spent a decade as a regular contributor to the radio variety shows “Live From Here” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”

March 31, 2023 (Friday): Maine's Own Dave Mallett and the Mallett Brothers details
Folk to Folk Rock Royalty…
This family will break generational barriers and join us for one awesome night together. Two rockin sons with the father of folk, and three great songwriters. This is an encore show…it was super sweet and amazing.

Singer-songwriter, David Mallett
, is one of America’s true original troubadours. In a career spanning four decades, he has recorded 17 albums, had several hundred covers of his songs, including the American folk classic Garden Song [Inch by Inch, Row by Row] and performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals across the US, Canada and Europe. He has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including National Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. Known for his carefully written, poetic offerings, his body of work has provided material for an eclectic list of artists that includes Alison Krauss, Pete Seeger, Hal Ketchum, Emmylou Harris, John Denver and the Muppets.

The Mallett Brothers/Duo Luke and Will
are strong songwrters with a county alt edge. Mot days they are with their indie rock and roll / Americana / country band that is all Maine. Their busy tour schedule since forming in 2009 has helped them to build a dedicated fan base across the U.S. and beyond while still calling the state of Maine their home. Theirs is a musical melting pot that's influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country and psychedelic sounds.

April 7, 2023 (Friday): Buffalo Nichols click for details
We are so happy to bring this artist to our stage for the first time. And artist is right, Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Carl Nichols has been cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, to a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe. This experience gave him the blend of past and future blues he had been looking for that is Buffalo Nichols. The tumbling lines of the 30-year-old’s finger-picked guitar carry echoes of the blues pioneers of the 1920s, but while the likes of Robert Johnson and Willie McTell sang with high, pungent voices, Nichols’s vocals are husky and intimate, which makes the intensity of his lyrics all the more emotional. All the text you read about him says, blues, but I would say there is some old time folk here too that makes his music really interesting and unique. Listen on NPR Tiny Desk for yerself.

April 8, 2023 (Saturday): Tinsley Ellis & Marcia Ball - Acoustic Songs and Stories details

They will weave the music together with stories from their years on stage and on the road. Finally, they will come together as a duo to close the night playing songs together and swapping tales of their travels and travails.

April 28, 2023 (Saturday): Dar Williams click for details
Singer, songwriter, author, activist, folk legend Known as much for her staunch progressive ideals as her raw acoustic energy, for decades Dar Williams has been captivating audiences with her sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting.

Critics say,"Dar Williams, one of America's very best singer-songwriters… Her songs are beautiful. Some are like finely crafted short stories. They are, variously, devastatingly moving, tenderly funny, subtle without being in any way inaccessible, and utterly fresh—not a cliche or a clunker in her entire songbook. --The New Yorker

"Seasons change, but Williams remains both ambitious and pleasingly plain-spoken... And importantly, she seems more at ease than ever. -- Rolling Stone

We just love her too :>)

May 5, 2023 (Friday): Miko Marks and Rissi Palmer click for details
We are really excited about this show. We don't have any promo for these two friends together, so take in their own stories, watch their videos and and imagine them together…wow!!

Miko: a country singer songwriter on the rise, in January of 2022, Marks was named to CMT’s “Next Women of Country” class….and who could blame them. She is just a shining light. Watch Miko.

Rissi: Rissi Palmer's gift lies in reaching across all musical boundaries. While she made her mark in Country Music, she is equally at home in R&B music, bringing the entire spectrum of popular music to bear on music she calls “Southern Soul.”As a passionate voice for country artists of color and those who have been marginalized in mainstream country music, Rissi launched her own radio show Color Me Country with Rissi Palmer on Apple Music Country. Watch Rissi.

I think Miko says it best as two artists and their connection as black women in country music. “ What’s happening with Rissi and me, we’re making our opportunity. We’re not getting it. We’re creating it. We’re a team, on a certain level. We still have our individual thing, too, but we have decided: Let’s make something bigger and better together.” And they will... right here on our stage. Read this full article in New Yorker’s Vulture. It’s just a great window into their music and relationship .

May 12, 2023 ( Friday): Tom Rush and Matt Nakoa click for details
Since Tom Rush's 1962 debut as an unknown folk-blues musician on the Boston/Cambridge music scene, he has established himself as a consummate performer and singer-songwriter. A few years back, a sold out celebration of his five-decade career anniversary at Boston Symphony Hall proves his fan loyalty and endurance. When you think of the importance of the folk scene in the 60's you should think of Tom. These days he is just as vital and entertaining. We welcome him back with a big hug!

May 20, 2023 (Saturday): The Rough & Tumble click for details
As many of you know who have seen this awesome duo, they have lived literally in a camper on the road for the last 7 or 8 years. Luckily for us they have finally taken up roots and right here in New England so we can call them our own!

About The Rough & Tumble… with many indie awards under their built this teeny tiny traveling folk band, has lived 10 years as a band and many years full time on the road with their two dogs in a 16’ camper."True Troubadors” In 2015 Mallory Graham and Scott Tyler quit their day jobs, sold everything they owned, and gave their thirty day notice on their rental house to trade in for a life permanently on the road. Don't let their vagabond tendencies fool you-- this americana-folk duo are a compact team of close harmonies, versatile instrumentation, and deliberate songwriting all presented with a nudge of the elbow and a tongue in the cheek. Haunting, quirky, solemn, and spritely, The Rough & Tumble are for the faint of heart and the strong of will. We just love them!

YOU HAVE SEEN HIM WITH TOM RUSH..NOW SEE HIM SOLO!
Singer song writer and pianist MATT NAKOA grew up on a small goat farm in Smyrna, NY and began composing music as a teenager. Following a formative stint as a classical pianist, Matt won scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. There he studied alongside soon-to-be Grammy winners St. Vincent and Esperanza Spaulding among others. After college, Matt toured with his band, The Fens, and eventually landed in New York City's vibrant piano bar scene. Matt quickly became a star performer at Manhattan's Brandy's Piano Bar, with lines outside the door each Saturday night. Matt's first solo album, Light In The Dark (2012), is an eclectic pop opus. In contrast, A Dozen Other Loves (2014), explores a simple acoustic palette. This intimate collection has earned many songwriting awards, including a win at Kerrville Folk Festival's prestigious New Folk Competition. Additionally, Matt's piano music has received favorable reviews in publications including The New York Times, and his film scoring has been featured by Disney. Matt now tours internationally, recently performing at The White House, throughout India, and regularly with folk music icon Tom Rush.

August 10, 2023 (Thursday): Comedian Bob Marley click for details

October 27, 2023 (Friday): The Tannahill Weavers click for details
FROM SCOTLAND"An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." - New York Times

Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland, and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the Tannahill Weavers have made an international name for their special brand of Celtic music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. As one of the world's premier traditional Celtic bands, their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies, and humorous tales of life in Scotland.

In 2021 they have been joined by exciting piper and fiddle player Iain MacGillivray, who is also Scotland's youngest Clan leader. Iain, a fluent Gaelic speaker, has worked on such exciting productions as Outlander and Men in Kilts, and has performed for a huge list of stars and dignitaries in recent years. As the band celebrate the nomination of their 18th recording, Òrach (“Golden” in Gaelic) as album of the year, and themselves as band of the year, they are firmly established as one of the premier groups on the concert stage. From reflective ballads to footstomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.
